The Hiking for Hearts 2008 Story............How it all began...............
This is where Hiking For Hearts began.  Hope you were able to read the story from 5280 Magazine.  It explains things so much more eloquently than I can put on here.  This almost feels like a personal blog area to tell our story and try to raise awareness for the wonderful resources available.  In the summer of 2008 Chris began the first of what is hoped to be many excursions to raise money for The Welcome Program.  He and his two friends - Navan Powers and Don Mueller - sat down and began to hammer out the details.  There was no hesitation from any of them as the vision started to take fruition.  They came up with the crazy plan to hike 9 of Colorado's 14'ers in only 4 days.  They would get up each day BEFORE the crack of dawn, hike all day, and come down in the late afternoon.  The three of them began to ask for sponsorships from friends and family members.  We made and put out flyers around the area, spoke with people, put messages out at work, and sent emails.  Chris posted info on 14'ers.com and we just tried to spread the information via word of mouth.
The guys finished 6 of the mountains.  They were turned around due to lightning storms on 3 of them.  They came home battered, blistered, bruised, exhausted, and humbled by their journey.  The pictures they brought home and the stories they told were inspiring and enlightening.  I think they all came home different men for their experiences.  When all was said and done, the amount of money raised came out to $9,100!  The program used that to help almost 400 families in some way.  400!!!  It was a bit mind boggling to try and understand what that meant.  There are SO MANY families that come through.  What would be done the following year??
